Almonds are a delicious and healthy snack that can be used in different types of recipes. The skin is sometimes not desirable at all and can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. So, If you’re tired of struggling to peel your almonds, your suffering is over. In this blog post, I will show you a few different ways to peel almonds quickly and easily.
I was about to make wild garlic pesto and did not have pine nuts for the pesto. So, I decided to use almonds instead and just one look at those unpeeled almonds turned me off. I quickly called my sister, who’s a great cook and everything was sorted. Here’s how you do it.
Method 1, Blanching
Blanching is the most common method of peeling almonds, but I totally cheated on this one. When you blanch, you have to boil the almonds in water for a few minutes and then cool them in ice water for a bit. But, here’s how I did it.
Step 1: Bring a pot of water to boil on the stove
Second step: Add your almonds to the water and let them simmer for about 1-2 minutes.
Step 3: Remove the almonds, drain them, and pat them with a dry cloth or kitchen towel. When blanching, this is the point where you add the almonds to ice water to cool, before you pat them dry that it. I however skipped the ice step and the almolds were perfect.
Last step: Use your fingers to gently squeeze each almond until the skin pops off.
Do not let the almost stay too long in water as they will start getting soft, so just a minute or so is enough. If you are blanching a lot of almonds, it might be better to do that in small batches.
Method 2, Freezing
For this method, you have to freeze the almonds in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freezing almonds helps to separate the skin from the almond and therefore making it easy to peel. Freeze the almonds for about 2 to 3 hours, remove them from the freezer, and let them defrost for a few minutes. Then, you gently squeeze the almonds until the skin pops off. That’s it. Almonds are peeled.
Soaking the almonds
This method required soaking the almonds in water for about 8 to 12 hours, or just overnight. From there, pat them dry just like in the first method and peel them. Voila, peeled almonds. Happy peeling.
